Your son or daughter has decided it is time they learnt to drive. You, as parents can have a very important role to play. I recommend to all my pupils that private practice if possible is vital. It speeds the learning process and builds up their confidence along with building up the experience they need. There are some factors I would ask you to consider,
Try where possible to have them practicing the things they are being taught and avoid jumping ahead, for example, if they have just learning how to negotiate their way through a roundabout don't throw them at the Headington roundabout at rush hour.
Try not to yell or shout even if you are in a panic, they won't respond to it and probably put them into a panic as well. Learning to drive now is a lot harder than it used to be, we have more traffic on the roads and more complicated junctions and roundabouts.
When you drive they are watching you, try to set a good example and if they comment how they have been shown to something differently than what you are doing, try not to respond with “Shut up, I have my licence “or “do as I say not as I do”. As you will know in driving there can be more than one way to achieve an objective.
If your son / daughter agree then come and spend an hour in the car with me to see what they are doing. More than often than not parents who do this go away impressed with what they have seen.
Once they have passed the test try to get them to take the Pass Plus course. They will gain much needed experience, . Remember that before they pass the driving test they cannot go onto the motorway, once they have passed then they can. Is that safe? Also apart from the experience they can qualify for insurance discounts from a lot of insurance companies and usually that will easily cover the cost of the course. |
